Moissanite was initially discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan, a French scientist. It originated as a meteorite falling to earth, thus natural moissanite is an extremely rare gem.

The more current moissanite is manufactured in a laboratory composed of silicon carbide – the gem is commonly compared to a diamond to which is engineered to give the illusion of the similar facets and can be indistinguishable.
