One of the Jewellery Quarter’s much-loved pubs is preparing for a fresh start. The Red Lion is set to reopen following a £500,000 restoration by independent Shropshire brewer Joule’s Brewery, with refreshed interiors, a new pizza offering and a courtyard built for catching up over a pint.
For those who know the pub, its character is central to the plans. Joule’s says the redevelopment will celebrate the building’s Victorian features while making room for new ways to enjoy this familiar Jewellery Quarter favourite.
A fresh chapter for a historic pub
The restoration promises plenty to explore, from decorative tiles and stained glass to reclaimed timber and cosy snugs.
Inside, the Saloon Bar and Smoke Room will each have their own atmosphere, while a private Club Room will provide another space to gather. A rooftop terrace and redesigned Beer Courtyard will give visitors more reasons to venture outdoors.
It’s a substantial investment in the pub’s future, led by a brewery with experience of restoring historic buildings. Based in Market Drayton, Joule’s has made traditional craftsmanship and the individual character of its pubs central to its approach.
Meet the new landlords
Taking the reins are George Holding and Tori Beardmore, whose previous experience includes The White Horse and Henry Tudor House in Shrewsbury.
Their ambition is to create a welcoming neighbourhood pub that feels part of the Jewellery Quarter, with its own identity and a regular place in local life.
As George explains: “The Red Lion has its own story and our job is to help it tell that story brilliantly.”
That means bringing together good beer, food and an atmosphere that welcomes both familiar faces and first-time visitors.
Pizza and pints in the courtyard
One of the biggest additions is Quarter Slice, a new pizza concept serving the Beer Courtyard.
The brewery says there will be at least four pizza flavours available daily, developed to complement Joule’s beers and wines from Château Bessan, its vineyard in Bordeaux.
The courtyard will also feature a bespoke Green Monkey Beer Shed, serving brewery-fresh lager. Its design has been developed with Joule’s steel fabricators, drawing inspiration from the metalworking skills associated with the Jewellery Quarter.
Together, the pizza offering and outdoor bar could make the courtyard a tempting stop for a relaxed afternoon or an evening with friends.
What will be behind the bar?
Visitors can expect Joule’s cask ales alongside seasonal beers, craft cold beers and Château Bessan wines.
With different spaces to settle into, the plans suggest a pub equally suited to a quiet drink, a casual bite to eat or a livelier gathering.
When will The Red Lion reopen?
Joule’s has announced the forthcoming reopening, although its announcement does not include a confirmed opening date.
For now, the £500,000 investment offers an encouraging glimpse of what’s ahead: a familiar Jewellery Quarter pub returning with restored features, new faces behind the bar and plenty of reasons to visit.
Based on Joule’s Brewery’s announcement published on 1 June 2026.
