Eight long years have hidden the George and Dragon, concealed behind scaffolding as it was planned to undergo an exciting transformation.

Well, we have some exciting news for you – the scaffolding is beginning to be taken down meaning that the building is now taking its shape of the cafe and apartments!

Our post way back in September was the first time we heard of the prospective plans for the George and Dragon, which served its last pint in the 90s. After eight years, the scaffolding that hid the Grade II-listed building has been taken down.

The man behind G&D projects, Gurbinder Sandhu, plans to revive the former pub into a cafe or restaurant and flats. Gurbinder Sandhu had explained that the project had overcome a milestone following the scaffolding being taken down.

He said: “The building looks great thanks to the developer Ashan Projects and it is a great moment to see the scaffolding come down. We are looking for an operator to run the cafe or restaurant on the ground floor and it would be a great place during the summer.”

Mr Sandhu continued on to say, “We expect the restoration project to be completed later this year. We are looking to Hotel du Vin for inspiration and would like the apartments to have a similar feel to the hotel rooms there. The design of the cafe would be decided by the operator.”

Those that are behind the project have plans in mind to restore the dated signs, proceeding to give the building a Dickensian look and feel.
